Time flies when your micron hand is powered by a Colonial Viper and a Cylon Raider

I got a thing.

I have many timey wimey stuff. Most, as is this one, is just for display (for the hoard).

It didn’t come with a box. At least not the one it originally came in (from what I can tell). But it did come with a standard Bradley outer watch case (being a Bradley Battlestar Galactica watch).

A little google fu and I found this case for a Bradley Star Wars watch.

I really liked that. I have:

  • a (several) 3d printer(s)
  • intermediate CAD skills
  • rudimentary photoshop skills
  • infinite free time
  • not a lot of friends

So I thought, why not make my own?

So I did.

First I needed to create the inner plastic insert I was missing. I started out with a cardboard template that I cut to shape and measured. Then I fired up Shapr3d on my iPad. This has been my goto cad program and they’ve just been making it better every update.

Then I printed and test fit the insert. It fit the case, but the well for the watch was a little too big so I had to go back into Shapr3d and make some adjustments. V2 was perfect. I had a blue color filament that seemed to match the Star Wars example. So I loaded it up and upped the print quality.

Then I fired up Affinity Photo (a cheaper alternative to Photoshop that’s a little nicer than GIMP) to start working on the images and logos.

The left photo just needed to be resized to fit and color corrected.

The right photo needed was built up from scratch. I found a vector image of the logo, a nice background of space, a good fit for the font, scanned the Bradley logo from a warranty card and put it all together… again based on the Star Wars reference photo above.

Finally print them on sticker vinyl. Cut them out with the cricut and you get the final result… which I think came out great.
